Enjoy the Meltdown

Pamela Geller after reading Monday's news.

Pamela "Atlas Shrugs" Geller, who is one of the more bug-fuck insane personalities on the Internet (and brother, that's saying a lot), completely lost her shit over the Annapolis conference on Middle East peace (which itself is, oh, about seven years too late). Just go here and look. Insane, racist, eliminationist babbling seems to be her stock in trade. She refers to Hamas as "savages," and calls the conference itself a "gang bang." She also links to Frank Gaffney's bizarre screed in which he claims the conference is a "gang rape." Keep in mind that these people often refer to liberals/progressives/anyone to the left of Atilla the Hun as "deranged" or "unhinged." I believe the psychologists call that "projection."

Naturally, you have to read the comments as well. Some of Ms. Geller's commenters are even crazier than she is, which is no mean feat. I particularly enjoy wxjames' declaration that we need "devine leadership." I actually agree. Andy Devine would make a fine leader. But wait, he's dead. Damn.

I hope James Wolcott weighs in on this topic soon. He has such a talent for commentary regarding Pammycakes.

Memo To Benito Giuliani and The Christian Right: Shut The Fuck Up

There's a lotta evil in this photo. A lotta crazy, too.

As you may have heard by now, the evil husk of a human known as Rudolph Giuliani recently received the endorsement of sanctimonious sack of shit Pat Robertson. So let's go over what this means. Giuliani is claiming that he deserves to be President because of September 11th. At least, that's what I get out of his campaign rhetoric. He wants to "keep America safe" by turning the country into a mirror image of the USSR's police state ca. 1948, plus racism. He wants to lock more people up indefinitely, spy on your telephone conversations and bank records, and torture the shit out of anyone even suspected of being an "enemy," as defined by him (note: history teaches us that such an approach never, ever ends well). In one of the Republican "debates" (if by "debate" you mean "the howling of the monkeys flinging shit at the zoo"), Giuliani got all up in nutjob Libertarian Ron Paul's grill because Paul had the audacity to suggest that US foreign policy might, might have something to do with motivating terrorist attacks against the United States. Here's exactly what Paul said:
Have you ever read the reasons they attacked us? They attack us because we've been over there; we've been bombing Iraq for 10 years. We've been in the Middle East -- I think Reagan was right.

We don't understand the irrationality of Middle Eastern politics. So right now we're building an embassy in Iraq that's bigger than the Vatican. We're building 14 permanent bases. What would we say here if China was doing this in our country or in the Gulf of Mexico? We would be objecting. We need to look at what we do from the perspective of what would happen if somebody else did it to us.

--snip--

I'm suggesting that we listen to the people who attacked us and the reason they did it, and they are delighted that we're over there because Osama bin Laden has said, "I am glad you're over on our sand because we can target you so much easier." They have already now since that time -- (bell rings) -- have killed 3,400 of our men, and I don't think it was necessary.
Wow. That's really controversial, isn't it? Cause precedes effect. Oh my. However, since that pesky little thing known as "reason" has no place in Republican politics, Giuliani, howling and throwing shit like the finest piece of in-heat monkey ass in the world was just out of reach, screeched that Ron Paul must be off his meds. Rather than examine actual causes and try to prevent doing things that are the geopolitical equivalent of kicking a hornet's nest and then wondering why you're getting stung (oh, I'm not saying that we shouldn't find Osama bin Laden and throw him in a hole for the rest of his miserable fucking life, so don't get all pissy about that), Rudolph decided to attack Ron Paul. To wit:
Wendell, may I comment on that? That's really an extraordinary statement. That's an extraordinary statement, as someone who lived through the attack of September 11, that we invited the attack because we were attacking Iraq. I don't think I've heard that before, and I've heard some pretty absurd explanations for September 11th.

And I would ask the congressman to withdraw that comment and tell us that he didn't really mean that.
That's right, bitches. But it went on, as Ron Paul tried to use (gasp) a historical example to buttress his argument:
I believe very sincerely that the CIA is correct when they teach and talk about blowback. When we went into Iran in 1953 and installed the shah, yes, there was blowback. A reaction to that was the taking of our hostages and that persists. And if we ignore that, we ignore that at our own risk. If we think that we can do what we want around the world and not incite hatred, then we have a problem.

They don't come here to attack us because we're rich and we're free. They come and they attack us because we're over there. I mean, what would we think if we were -- if other foreign countries were doing that to us?
In case you're wondering, Paul's position is the same as set out in the US Government's 9/11 Commission Report (warning-PDF). But it's so much more fun and easy to say that "They hate us for our freedoms." Yeah, Giuliani fell back on the same tired-ass explanations for terrorism that were oh-so-popular immediately after 9/11 in a post-debate interview with talk show host and Republican cum bucket Sean Hannity--you can see the video here. I wonder if, during the "harsh interrogations," the idea of which get Giuliani's shriveled little penis semi-tumescent, the modern-day inquisitors ask the detainees why they hate our freedoms.

But what does all this have to do with Pat Robertson? I'm glad you asked. Two days after the 9/11 terror attacks, Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell got together on TV to combine their two-and-a-half functioning neurons into a brain trust for the ages, in an attempt to determine why these awful attacks had just taken place. You know what they blamed? Our freedoms.
Falwell said, "The ACLU has got to take a lot of blame for this. And I know I'll hear from them for this, but throwing God...successfully with the help of the federal court system...throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools, the abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked and when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad...I really believe that the pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way, all of them who try to secularize America...I point the thing in their face and say you helped this happen."
Robertson said, "I totally concur, and the problem is we've adopted that agenda at the highest levels of our government, and so we're responsible as a free society for what the top people do, and the top people, of course, is the court system."
The word "hypocrite" doesn't begin to describe these two cocksuckers. Giuliani is running for president based on the fact that he wasn't visibly shitting himself on the morning of September 11, 2001. He wants to tear down a couple of centuries' worth of liberties to make sure that the people who "hate our freedom" won't have anything left to hate. If anyone suggests that there might be root causes for terrorism, he totally loses his shit. He also supports abortion rights, gay rights, has been seen in drag in public on several occasions, associates with suspected criminals, is a serial adulterer, and treats his ex-wives and his children like they carry the plague. Pat Robertson loudly declaims that abortion and homosexuality and feminism and, you know, our rights are why we endure terrorism, and also spent all of the Clinton years warning us that Clinton's sexual indiscretions were going to doom us all, because we just can't be led by people who enjoy orgasms and don't think that homosexuals should be confined to prison camps. It makes baby Jeebus angry. Also, in case you were wondering if Giuliani is actually the most "moral" of the Republican presidential candidates (according to the fucked-up morality of the Christian right, that is), Mike Huckabee is actually a Baptist minister. So Robertson could've thrown his support behind a candidate who is much more Republican Jeebus-friendly than Giuliani. But he didn't.

Giuliani and Robertson. They've teamed up.

So please, please Pat and Rudolph: Shut the fuck up. You two give hypocritical assholes a bad name.

This Shit Is Hard to Believe

This is Glenn Beck.
He needs that microphone set on fire and rammed up his ass.

Glenn Beck has a show on CNN and a radio talk show. He's made lots of douchebaggy statements before, but he really raised the bar today.

He somehow drew a connection between people who "hate America" and the poor people losing their homes in and around San Diego today. Unlike the delusional religious cockbags, he doesn't even claim that it's some sort of divine retribution. No, he just glories in the loss of others for its own sake.
BECK: Schwarzenegger came out over the weekend and he said the Republicans need to run to the center and they need to grab the center. And the headline -- I looked at it, and I went "OK, OK, what is this? What is this? Oh, it's Schwarzenegger. I'm probably going to disagree with it." And then I started reading it, and I absolutely disagreed with it. He said they need to start talking about health care and education. That's not the way to win.

Let's talk about health care and education? That's not the way to win. That's not the way to win on any front. I'm not even talking about -- the least I care about is winning the election. How about winning the war? How about saving our country? And, you know, it made me think. I want to make this very clear. When I say on the air, and I've said it a lot lately, that we need to come together and we need to get back into the center, we're being pushed on to the edges -- I want you to understand, that is not on policies. I don't mean that we come in the center on policies. We come to the center on principles. We come back to the center of the melting pot, that we're all one America, that just because I disagree with you doesn't mean you hate America, and I love America. We all love America. We just disagree on how we should function, what we should do, big government, small government. It doesn't mean you hate America. I think there is a handful of people who hate America. Unfortunately for them, a lot of them are losing their homes in a forest fire today.
That's a direct quote. What could possibly make someone say such a thing? Is he:
  1. deranged,
  2. dead inside,
  3. just a rotten piece of shit,
  4. an accurate representative of the modern Republican Party, or
  5. all of the above?

You know the correct answer.

Just what do these rotten bastards have to do to get fired?

Found over at First Draft.

I Knew I Should've Waited

These two screeching harpies were joined by their lord and master, Satan, shortly after the above photo was taken.

It looks like I called "what the fuck" on the wrong story today. Sure, it's mildly bizarre that the family of George Gipp pulled his old bones out of the ground for DNA testing, but that's nothing compared to the latest from Ann Coulter.
During the October 8 edition of CNBC's The Big Idea, host Donny Deutsch asked right-wing pundit Ann Coulter: "If you had your way ... and your dreams, which are genuine, came true ... what would this country look like?" Coulter responded, "It would look like New York City during the [2004] Republican National Convention. In fact, that's what I think heaven is going to look like." She described the convention as follows: "People were happy. They're Christian. They're tolerant. They defend America." Deutsch then asked, "It would be better if we were all Christian?" to which Coulter responded, "Yes." Later in the discussion, Deutsch said to her: "[Y]ou said we should throw Judaism away and we should all be Christians," and Coulter again replied, "Yes." When pressed by Deutsch regarding whether she wanted to be like "the head of Iran" and "wipe Israel off the Earth," Coulter stated: "No, we just want Jews to be perfected, as they say. ... That's what Christianity is. We believe the Old Testament, but ours is more like Federal Express. You have to obey laws."

After a commercial break, Deutsch said that "Ann said she wanted to explain her last comment," and asked her, "So you don't think that was offensive?" Coulter responded: "No. I'm sorry. It is not intended to be. I don't think you should take it that way, but that is what Christians consider themselves: perfected Jews. We believe the Old Testament. As you know from the Old Testament, God was constantly getting fed up with humans for not being able to live up to all the laws. What Christians believe -- this is just a statement of what the New Testament is -- is that that's why Christ came and died for our sins. Christians believe the Old Testament. You don't believe our testament." Coulter later said: "We consider ourselves perfected Christians. For me to say that for you to become a Christian is to become a perfected Christian is not offensive at all."
Wow. Go read the entire transcript. This woman is fucking nuts. I wonder if Pammycakes regrets her previous support for Ann Coulter. Funny--Pammy hasn't commented just yet.

I, for one, think it's a great idea to let all the religious people be intolerant of one another. I've gotten awfully sick of all this "person of faith" bullshit lately. The precepts of different religions matter--if you make your religion a part of your public self, then said religion should be open to scrutiny. As it stands right now, people claim to be religious, then claim exemption from the examination of their beliefs. That's stupid.

Limbaugh: Still Ten Pounds of Shit in a Five-Pound Sack

Rush Limbaugh, undated file photo.

I'd like to meet the estimable (as in, "Guess how much of a douchebag he is") Rush Limbaugh one day.

And kick him square in his shriveled little nuts.

Once again, for the record, this fuckmook avoided going to Vietnam. But he thinks he can talk shit about people who have had their ass in the grass and then criticize the leaders who put them there. Bull. Fucking. Shit.

"Phony soldiers."

Christ, he's a rotten excuse for a human being.

I Know Condoms Are a Barrier Method, But This Is Ridiculous

Well, it is a very big border.

Condoms. What can't they do? In addition to helping prevent unwanted pregnancies and STD's, one House Republican thinks they can stop illegal immigration! I shit you not. I can't make up things like this.
A congressman is pushing a not-so-quick fix in the debate over illegal immigrants from Mexico: free contraceptives.

"A slower rate of growth of Mexico's population would improve the economy of Mexico. It would also reduce the environmental pressure on Mexico's ecosystem. But a slower rate of growth would also reduce the long-term illegal immigration pressure on America's borders," reasoned Rep. Mark Kirk, who also supports stronger border security in the short-term.

In reality, fertility rates have plunged in Mexico since 1980, when an average couple would have five or more children. Now, the country's fertility rate has dropped to 2.5 children, compared to 2.1 for the United States, according to United Nations data.

Kirk, an Illinois Republican, made the argument on Thursday during a heated debate in the House of Representatives over whether the U.S. government should be allowed to donate condoms and other contraceptives to family planning agencies abroad that also engage in abortion.

The proposal was narrowly approved by the House, over the protests of anti-abortion lawmakers who prefer sex abstinence education. The measure faces a veto threat from the White House.

Kirk, who attended college in Mexico and holds a master's degree from the London School of Economics, may have offered an idea that might appeal to some fiscal conservatives.

Shipping condoms to the poor in Mexico could be cheaper than the multibillion-dollar fence being constructed along the U.S.-Mexico border.
It's funny to watch the crazy Republicans--is their hatred of sexuality going to win out over their good old-fashioned racism and xenophobia? Stay tuned next week to find out!

Really, though, there's so much here that's funny and tragic. To begin with, the oh-so-hilarious phrase "anti-abortion lawmakers who prefer sex abstinence education." How the fuck did abortion get mixed up in this? These fools just don't wany anyone fucking, anywhere. On to Rep. Kirk's assumption that carpet-bombing Mexico with Durex (I guess that would be the new GBU-69 Anti-potential Personnel Device in military terms) will magically reduce fertility rates, which will in turn end illegal immigration. Uh, Mr. Kirk? I have a couple of friends I would like you to meet. They're called "Cause" and "Effect." Finally, what kind of imperialistic bullshit is this, anyway? It's not enough that these "small-government conservatives" have to be up to their eyeballs in our personal lives--now they're looking to go international? (And, yes, I know about all the bullshit with respect to AIDS prevention programs in Africa and condoms.)

We paid Mr. Kirk over $165,000 last year so he could come up with brainstorms like this. God Bless America.

Angels and Ministers of Grace Defend Us

Lynne Cheney's favorite beer.

Please, dear lord, don't let this happen.
Lynne Cheney, the wife of Vice President Cheney, is “being floated in Senate GOP leadership circles as a possible replacement for the late Sen. Craig Thomas (R-WY), who died Monday night.”

We're begging down here.

Bill O'Reilly: Master of Subtlety

Oh no! Them Mexkins is destroying my power structure!

Wow. Kind of like the Westboro Baptist nutzoids, O'Reilly isn't shy about tipping his hand. Watch this video. The good part is near the end, about 4:45 into the clip. Sorry the sound quality is so crappy, but there's nothing I can do about it.

Here's a transcript of O'Reilly, Exemplar Of Tolerance:
Bill O'Reilly: But do you understand what the New York Times wants, and the far-left want? They want to break down the white, Christian, male power structure, which you're a part, and so am I, and they want to bring in millions of foreign nationals to basically break down the structure that we have. In that regard, Pat Buchanan is right. So I say you've got to cap with a number.

Emphasis mine.

A couple of other thoughts:

One, I didn't know that citizenship was a "prize" we handed out to people.

Alsi, O'Reilly, interestingly enough, refers to "big business" as a "special interest" in this clip. That's something you almost never hear anyone say. You know, "What's good for General Motors is good for the country" and all. I don't have cable, and wouldn't regularly watch Fox "News" even if I did, so I don't know if this is part of Goddam Bill O'Reilly's regular schtick.

Presented, for Your Consideration

You may recognize the title to this post. Rod Serling often used that phrase when narrating Twilight Zone episodes for TV. It seemed appropriate. I only wish this was confined to the Twilight Zone. A few thoughts:

1. What the fuck?

2. I like their presentation of others as "hateful."

3. Learn to carry a fucking tune.

4. You kind of have to admire their consistency.

5. No, really. What the fuck?

6. I hope Michael Jackson sues them. And wins.

7. I never hope Michael Jackson wins.

More Rank Hypocrisy

Do they hand these out to Bush appointees?

So it seems that another GOP jerkoff has been caught doing bad things--in this case, it's Randall Tobias. He is fond of strangling irony while someone else is choking his chicken.

That's right. Here's another right-wing gasbag who pushed abstinence on other people while visiting handjob huts around DC. He's married, of course, and encourages abstinence and/or monogamy for others. So let's add him to the list.

Stunning Examples of Right-Wing Hypocrisy
Bill Bennett
Rush Limbaugh
Newt Gingrich
Henry Hyde
Bob Barr
Bob Livingston
Tom DeLay
Mark Foley
Ted Haggard
Jerry Falwell
Pat Robertson
Randall Tobias

Note that this is by no means an exhaustive list.

Watch Jon Stewart Hand John McCain His Own Ass

Wow. McCain's just imploding. Let's see--he told Stewart that he brought him an IED, that he'd kick his dog, and that the Baghdad markets are great, 'cause they take plastic (what's the odds on them accepting AmEx?). Then he implies that the audience wants the US to lose (whatever the hell losing means when you're refereeing a three-way civil war).

Maybe McCain knows he has as much of a chance as Dole in 1996. Maybe he's mad about his upcoming (and continuing) fundie ass-kissing. Maybe he's just lost the capacity to be funny. Or perhaps it's a combination of these factors.

Whatever it is, he's in for a long year and a half if this keeps up.

At any rate, the more inept the Republicans are, the better it is for you, me, and everyone else who doesn't have bank accounts in the Caymans.

Data Trump Values*

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
These chowderheads could've come up with a better education plan. Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk.

We recently saw the release of yet another study showing that "abstinence-only" education is a waste of money (as well as a crock of shit).

Not that the current crop of chuckleheads who run the country will pay attention. But it's good to know if you care about public education in your community and nationwide.

Here's a PDF of the Mathematica report. Here's the NY Times article from today's paper. The print edition carried a longer piece, so you might consider picking one of those up this afternoon if you still can.

*A "senior Bush advisor" once remarked that "values trump data" where sex education is concerned. Seriously.

Adios, Douchebag

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Even the Chinese are against him.

So Imus got canned. Good. It's actually long since overdue.

However, that alone isn't really post-worthy here at Punch and Jude. Oh, no. You've gotta have the twist.

What did Don Imus (finally) get axed over? Making misogynistic, hateful, racist-ass comments.

So what do the denizens of the right-wing sewers have to say? See for yourself!

Well, the racist hatemongers won one today.

Presidentin' Is Still Hard Work

Now who kin run mah war fer me?

Check out the latest brainstorm from the Bush Administration--they're looking for a "war czar."

No, really. I am not making this up.
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House wants to appoint a high-profile overseer to manage the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan but has had trouble finding someone to take the job, The Washington Post reported on Wednesday.

At least three retired four-star generals approached by the White House in recent weeks have turned down the position, the report said.

The war "czar" would report directly to President George W. Bush and national security adviser Stephen Hadley and would have authority to issue directions to the
Pentagon and the State Department, the newspaper said.

Retired Marine Gen. John "Jack" Sheehan, a former top NATO commander, was among those who rejected the job, the newspaper reported.

"The very fundamental issue is, they don't know where the hell they're going," Sheehan told the Post.

Sheehan said he believes that Vice President Dick Cheney and his hawkish allies remain more powerful within the administration than pragmatists looking for a way out of Iraq, the Post reported.

"So rather than go over there, develop an ulcer and eventually leave, I said, 'No, thanks,' " Sheehan told the paper.

Retired Army Gen. Jack Keane and retired Air Force Gen. Joseph Ralston were also approached and said they were not interested in the position, the newspaper said, citing sources.

Ralston declined to comment while Keane confirmed he turned down the job, the Post said.

The White House has not publicly disclosed its interest in creating the position, hoping to find someone to fill the post before the job is announced.

Officials said they were still considering options to reorganize the White House's management of the two wars, the Post said.
Uh, you know, there's already someone who's in charge of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He has this oval-shaped office in a large white mansion in Washington, DC. You know, that "Decider" guy? Maybe you've heard of him.

Interesting how no one wants to be a part of Bush's train wreck, either. You'd think that you could find at least one sycophantic general ready to jump at the chance.

Hey, there might be someone for the job, after all. He's looking for work, I believe.

If I just sprinkle the pixie dust on the ground after I plant the magic beans, then Freedom™ will break out everywhere!

Finally, this looks like a good opportunity to use my absolute favorite photo ever of Rummy.

I swear, this photo has not been retouched.

Karma: It's a Bitch

Nelson Muntz--he can't spell "schadenfreude," but he knows it when he sees it.

Looks like Rudolph's not gonna get to sit in the Oval Office after all. Not with friends like Bernard Kerik.

Good. The last thing this country needs is another authoritarian douchebag in the White House. As far as that goes, Giuliani's actually worse than Bush. Bush is an amateur at being authoritarian. "Benito" Giuliani is a pro.

Is Mitt Romney gonna be the last man standing? That would suit me just fine. I've got a better shot at being President than him.

Should've Upgraded to "Deluxe" Missile Defense System

For just an extra $2.5 billion, you could've gotten the waterproofing and the clear coat protectant.

Okay. Now this is fucking stupid.
Rain KO'd Interceptors During Korea Missile Tests (Updated)

Torrential rains wiped out a quarter of the U.S.' intercontinental ballistic missile interceptor silos in Ft. Greely, Alaska last summer -- right when North Korea was preparing to carry out an advanced missile launch, according to documents obtained by the Project On Government Oversight.

"The flooding occurred during a three-week period between the end of June and early July 2006," POGO notes, in a statement. "The flooding damaged 25% of the U.S. interceptor missiles’ launch capability. These silos house the interceptor missiles that would be used to attempt to intercept a missile aimed at the United States. No interceptors were in the flooded silos."

An internal assessment by Boeing, the silos' chief contractor, shows seven flooded interceptor silos, out of the 26 at Ft. Greely. Two silos have more than 62 feet of water; a third has more than 50. Estimated times of repair range from four to 14 months. Boxcar like structures called Silo Interface Vaults (SIVs), adjacent to the interceptor silos, were also flooded, "two of them by as much as 15 feet of water," POGO says. "Three SIVs must have all electronic and mechanical systems replaced. Four other SIVs have partial damage. One SIV was so damaged that it shifted vertically in the ground like a house shifting off its foundation." It's a strange turn of events, considering "an environmental impact study of the facilities at Ft. Greely notes there is 'little rainfall in the region.'"

The "water intrusion... resulted from the confluence of several unanticipated and highly unlikely events," the Missile Defense Agency said in a statement . "In particular, totally unprecedented rainfall created a rapidly rising ground water condition coincident with steps of construction when the SIVs were susceptible to damage. The Missile Defense Agency allocated resources to repair the damage and recover from the event. Furthermore, steps have been taken to prevent recurrences in the future."

POGO blames Boeing for being "at least partly responsible for failing to protect the silos" from the elements. Nevertheless, the watchdog group observes, the company "will most likely still receive an estimated $38 million to repair the silos and a $100 million no-bid contract to build more silos. Boeing would also receive a $7 million award fee added to the contract."

But the larger issue at work here is: What exactly are we getting, for the $9 billion a year we're paying for missile defense? And why can't it take a little (ok, a whole bunch of) rain?

UPDATE: "This isn't the first problem that they had with the missile silos," notes Center for Defense Information missile guru Victoria Samson. "The February 2005 test failure of the GMD [ground midcourse defense] system [at Ft. Greely] was due to faulty silo arms that failed because they weren't able to handle the heavily salty environment in which they were placed, so Boeing had to pull them out and replace them. That's some real quality control work there. This also shows that the whole argument behind spiral development - that you can test and develop at the same time - turns out to be completely wrong."
One thing I kind of miss about the military is the way they can euphemize just about anything. Next time your house gets flooded, call the insurance company and tell them you've had a "water intrusion." Shit, you could probably get the local news to do a feature on you if you used a phrase like that.

So is this missile defense deal anything more than a giant taxpayer giveaway to Boeing? This system has screwed up just about every test, even the ones that were heavily rigged in its favor.

And it ain't cheap, either.
