Goofy Submarine Stuff

The USS Jimmy Carter (SSN-23), will be christened in about a week. The third and final of the Seawolf-class submarines will be the new "special projects boat," taking the place of the recently-decommissioned USS Parche (SSN-683). You can read a really brief account of one of Parche's operations here. Or you could read Sherry Sontag's and Christopher Drew's Blind Man's Bluff.

I knew some guys who had been on Parche. They did some crazy shit. Even by the rather generous standards of submarining, they did some outrageous stuff.

I guess that SSN-23 will do a lot of similar craziness. Luckily for us all, though, the stakes aren't as high as when the Parche was creeping into the Barents Sea.
